Personally, I’d stay away from using fonts without license in commercial projects. On free font pages like Dafont, it’s distributed without any accompanying licensing terms. The Black Rose font file is from November 1999 and includes the note “© Bright Ideas”, but no further information. I would assume their fonts have to be considered abandonware today. Type historian Luc Devroye mentions one Rick Hutchinson. It is not clear to me who authored the fonts. The Black Rose font came bundled with Bright Ideas, a now defunct magazine published from Carlsbad, California in the late 1990s. At some later point, the letterspacing was decreased. The first version of this logo used Black Rose pretty much out of the box. The site itself was designed by co-founder Zach Klein, who wrote about it on his blog – I’m assuming he was responsible for the logo, too, but I don’t know for sure. On April 18, 2006, a new look (v4) including the logo based on Black Rose was introduced.
